Kentucky Bourbon Cake {and a Giveaway}
Some things in life are just simple. Simple is sometimes the best way to go...I sometimes forget about simple...This cake is a very simple butter cake with bourbon. And, no doubt...this time at BIWB, simple is best!
Super easy, super rich, and super boozy. All my favorite things!
My friend, Susan (over at My Mother's Apron Strings), makes amazing and comforting Bundt cakes of all sorts: lemon, apple fritter, pumpkin caramel, banana, vanilla...I've had my eye in making a boozy version of her vanilla Bundt cake for quite some time. I knew I wanted a solid vanilla butter cake and my booze of choice would, of course, be bourbon.
I love the smell and taste of bourbon baked in a vanilla cake. I especially love when the bourbon is used in the soaking sauce AND in the glaze. This cake does both and does not disappoint.
I used my new cookbook, Vintage Cakes by Julie Richardson. She has some great recipes and lots of nostalgia about each cake. This cake is inspired by, what else, her Kentucky Bourbon Cake. I made mine with dates; you don't have to, neither does Julie. It's all good!
And, because we love you and we love our Bundt cakes, we are giving away a Nordic Ware Fleur di Lis Bundt Pan! We also must thank our friends at Sur La Table for helping us with this giveaway.
To enter, please leave us a comment and tell us which cake you would make from Vintage Cakes. Our giveaway is open to any one who lives on the planet, of course. You have until 9pm PST, February 10, 2013 to enter. Please also tell us how to contact you.
Ready, set, go!

Blueberry and Cream Cupakes (with Gin!) and Our ~First~ Giveaway!!
So, have you ever watched Hoarders? I know, not something you'd expect me to talk about on this blog. But, I ~more often than I'd like to admit~ find myself glued to the TV watching these very, very sad people trapped by all their STUFF. I have stuff, do you?
Good thing for me, though, is that Hoarders makes me feel okay with my stuff. I do need to purge this fall and make some changes to my life plans with all my stuff. For example: Do I need 10 plastic lawn chairs and 2 tables for the next back yard bbq bash? Probably not. I think my large party days are over and to "draw" a crowd like that probably isn't in the cards. Maybe next big bash will be a "Bring Your Own Chair" party...I don't know.
And, I will admit: there is a method to all this purging madness. The simple truth is I need MORE room for all my BAKING STUFF! Baking stuff before party furniture? I think yes!
The Giveaway!
Yes, you read it correctly: OUR FIRST GIVEAWAY!! So, we have a few little this and thats for one of you--to add to YOUR baking STUFF! We're very excited to start our giveaways and we hope you can come back over the next few months to see what else we're giving away. Our friends at Sur La Table are helping us gather up some of these goodies--We can't wait to share!
We're giving away these two fun cupcake items from Meri Meri: 3 cupcake boxes and cupcake liners. Pretty cute, huh? All you have to do is leave us a comment with your contact information.
Now, on to the cupcakes!
I made these cupcakes using a few recipes. The most special part is the blueberry compote that I learned to make from my friend, Susan, over at My Mother's Apron Strings. Susan is amazing...I just wished I was as generous as her. She's so creative and a great baker. Someday we're gonna meet up and enjoy some tea and treats...I have hope. :)
Extra special blueberry and mascarpone filled cupcakes with yummy blueberry mascarpone frosting...And, yes, there is booze in these: blueberry infused gin!
Baking with Spirit Feature
I'm also sharing this recipe as part of our friend's, Janine, blog Cake of the Week, which features a monthly Baking with Spirit challenge. This month it's GIN! I'm excited to be able to share these blueberry-gin inspired treats! Please check out Janine's fun creations...Reading her blog always bring out the Anglophile in me!
So much is happening!!!

Fig and Hazelnut Tart with Frangelico
Sweet and nutty, laced with Frangelico with a crunchy top and creamy center...Just my kind of Sunday treat to end my weekend on a happy note. This is a Bakewell tart and legend has it that the source is English and the buttery spongy center is much like a frangipane. My recipe comes from inspiration from my friend, and fellow blogger, Susan at My Mother's Apron Strings and her recipe for Bakewell Tart. Susan is an amazing baker and I know that recipes she shares are tried and true. Just like her! :-)
I wanted to make something with Frangelico, the Italian hazelnut liqueur that I first discovered in my mid 20s while on a business trip in Seattle. There were a bunch of us working up at Boeing facilities and dinner out was always an adventure. We discovered a great Italian restaurant that served Frangelico warmed in a small snifter. Such elegance, such warmth...We always slept well after a long day at work, a great dinner, much laughter and our Frangelicos. Ah, those were the days!
I have never roasted and removed the skins from hazelnuts. I'm not really sure whether I will do that again, although the pay-off is pretty damn sweet!
I hope you try this tart. It's really easy and you can make it in all sorts of combinations...Some of the few that Susan and I discovered: strawberry or raspberry jam with almonds and Chambord and peach or apricot with almonds and Amaretto. Choose your favorite jam, nut and liqueur and you're sure to please just about anyone!
Manga!
(P.S. I've learned to make collages on PicMonkey...Yay! I would very much like to thank Ashton at Something Swanky for her AWESOME tutorial. Very Cool!!!)
I'm sharing this over at Cake of the Week's Baking with Spirit Challenge for May: Fruit and Alcohol (booze or hootch around these parts...). Please visit Janine's blog to see ever more great baking creations with booze!

Caramel Pumpkin Bourbon Cake
Amazingly moist with just the right splash of bourbon for a cold or rainy January day.
Bottoms Up!
Bottoms Up!
I found the basis for this recipe on My Mother's Apron Strings, a wonderful baking blog created by my friend, Susan. I met Susan through her blog and the gift of her friendship has been one of the highlights of last year for me. I used Susan's recipe for Caramel Pumpkin Pound Cake with Warm Caramel Sauce as my inspiration for this BIWB, bourbon-infused pound cake. Friends in Baking: an amazing gift.
I changed Susan's recipe a bit and made a modification on the use of the sauce. I decided that I wanted to make a bourbon-soaked cake, so I used the same recipe for soaking sauce as in my Almost Tortuga Rum Cake. I also switched things up and used vanilla bean paste, again one of the BIWB secret ingredients. I love this stuff!
Thankfully, the Old Crow is almost gone...
On to the "real" stuff: Jim Beam!!
Sharing this recipe over at Cake of the Week's Baking with Spirit Challenge for October: Autumnal! Check out all the creative and boozy Baking with Spirit Challenges!
